İnci Furni: She Waited for a While

Curator
Eda Berkmen

She Waited for a While is a spatial arrangement composed of drawings, video performances and objects. As a starting point to the exhibition, İnci Furni takes the specific qualities of the gallery space and her process of settling into it, and focuses on the ways in which people relate to spaces, objects and images. Composed around coincidences, everyday gestures and rhythms, chance encounters and momentary decisions, the installation invokes the potential for the emergence of unexpected meanings and associations.

The drawings in the exhibition consist of portraits that Furni produced with inspiration from the people she encountered on the street and still lifes of everyday objects which, like a totem, vertically traverse the paper surface. Isolated from their surroundings and depicted in a state that suggests anticipation and reflection, the figures are fixed on the paper with swift and simple lines. They conjure the intuitive knowledge of first impressions and gain character through their posture, gaze and outfits. Together with the still life depictions of daily objects associated with entertainment, leisure and play, these portraits present the viewers with the source material of an incomplete, open narrative. The practical, modular and mobile structures built by city’s fishermen, idle sitters, street peddlers and other urban dwellers who spend extended amounts of time on the streets are the inspiration for the structure of She Waited for a While. In addition to the drawings, the installation includes sounds, objects and moving image, which recall the openness of street life to the gallery space.

The exhibition also presents video performances Furni produced in situ during the two and a half months she spent in the gallery. Lorem Ipsum, the video of the improvised performance of Furni with the gallery door marks the artist’s initial encounter and negotiation with the space. In the performance titled I Found This on the Way, İnci Furni lists a series of words in a stream of consciousness as she rearranges objects on a table.

In this performance inspired by the Dolapdere flea market, the words, objects and movements of the artist at times link at other times disintegrate like the parts of a puzzle. Furni disrupts conventional forms of representation, movement, gesture and language to incite new formats that enable different meanings and connections.

She Waited for a While explores the possibilities of an alternative order that upholds precarious and ephemeral modes of relationships, which disrupts categorizations such as animate and inanimate, active and passive, cause and effect.  By employing quotidian, light forms that develop along a production process contingent on coincidence and changing circumstances, Furni also negotiates institutional methods of display and valuation.

Born in 1976 in Bursa, İnci Furni received her BA in Painting from Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University. She continues to live and work in Istanbul. While she resumed her individual artistic practice, she also collaborated with the Hafriyat Group from 2007 to 2010.
