New and Newest Music Festival

Exploring the concepts of diversity, accessibility and transitivity, the third edition of Arter’s New and Newest Music Festival will be held online on 25, 26 and 27 February under the artistic direction of Matthias Osterwold. Instigated in 2020 and held online in 2021 due to the pandemic, the 2022 edition of the festival will offer music afficionados and curious listeners a three-day programme comprised of online panels and film screenings which revolve around the multifaceted character of new music.

The festival will start, on Friday, 25 February, with an online seminar which aims to elaborate the role of sound and music in contemporary art. Led by Rana Gediz İren, the event will examine the increasing permeability between sound and visual arts in the 20th century via selected collaborations between composers and visual artists, as well as Arter’s exhibitions.

The second event of the day will be the world premiere of the film documenting Amy Salsgiver’s performance which took place in the second-floor gallery of Arter while it hosted the group exhibition For Eyes That Listen. Inspired by the exhibited works which relate to the visual world surrounding us from the perspective of sound and silence, composer and percussionist Amy Salsgiver’s concert features compositions by John Cage and John Luther Adams, as well as a new work composed by Salsgiver herself with inspiration from Jarosław Kozłowski’s installation Exercises in Ethics presented in the exhibition.

The second day of the festival, Saturday, 26 February, will start with academic and poet Sandeep Bhagwati’s keynote, followed by an online panel which explores, under the moderation of Matthias Osterwold, the diversity of new music through identity politics, international and transnational musical ensembles and ethnomusicology. Featuring introductions by directors and participating musicians, the second day’s programme will also include short documentary screenings based on the multicultural performances and nonconventional practices of musicians and ensembles.

The festival programme on Sunday, 27 February will focus on accessibility and the instrumentalisation of human body. The first panel of the day will open up space to explore and discuss the intricate processes of creation/sharing and the possibilities of enhancing accessibility in music. The second online panel will bring into focus the use of human body as a musical instrument and the transformation of body’s natural rhythm into music. This online session will also examine musical experiments informed by technological advancements and transhumanism, along with the most fundamental forms of movement: dance and vibration. The festival will end with the world premiere of 50 Looks within Rainforest V, a film documenting the workshop and rehearsal processes of Merce Cunningham’s 50 Looks, reinterpreted in the context of the exhibition Rainforest V (variation 3) through a collaboration with Istanbul Municipal Theatres Centre for Contemporary Performing Arts.
